What is this bird?

I'm having trouble identifying this bird that showed up on our deck yesterday. Can somebody help?

thanks Lynn! - I looked it up in 2 field guides and it sure looks right to me. I don't know why I missed it the first 10 times I looked through my Stokes guide!

I was going to say a female goldfinch at first. I have thumbed through my Stokes for hours - sometimes without any luck!

It's a tough one. I've never seen one but a fellow here in Minnesota had one in his yard this summer. I think their color can be a bit variable. Beautiful bird! Did you contact Birdchick about Cape May yet? I don't think she has you on her list.

Mary,
hard to tell from the photo, but it was quite a bit larger than a goldfinch.

Lynn,
Thanks for pushing me into action - I just emailed Birdchick about Cape May. Can't wait!

BTW - Mary & Lynn - are your husbands going to Cape May with you???

Not mine, it'll be just me.

Mine will stay behind, too. He's the non-birding type.

Oh yes, summer tanager! That rich ochre coloration shot with light red, big yellowish bill...much more definitive than my mystery bird.Summer tanagers love to sit on deck railings. They're usually looking for wasps and yellowjackets that have nests around decks, and the railings give them a place to smash the stingers off. And this is the time of year they do it--on migration. Congratulations on great pix of a beautiful bird!

thanks Julie! I had a homemade wasp trap sitting on the railing with lots of wasps inside & that's what interested him.
