deer in field

She waited while I zoomed in a little...

I took this one just before she ran away. When she got up, I noticed she was wearing a collar - what's that all about? You can barely see it in this photo - click to enlarge, if you like.

When my folks were retired up in northern Minnesota there was a doe that would come around that wore a red/orange collar. It was semi-tame and I believe someone put the collar on her to keep her from being shot.

Beautiful! I love deer.

Susan, did you see that Birdchick posted about an apparent shortage of mealworms? Perhaps you should contact her.

Precious head shot! Semi-tame?

Wildlife officials put collars on deer just like bird banders put bands on birds. Radio collars.

Or, she is just listening to her iPod.

I saw a similar scene--deer standing neck-deep in wheat. At first glance, I thought it was a bird feeding at the tip of a stalk--then realized it was ears--not wings!

Very pretty photo.

Great catch. I had never heard of the banding deer. I am learning so much by blogging.

As "Susan Gets Native" put it, its prob a tracking device being used to track the patterns and or territory of the deer colonies in the area. Or it could be a deer that was in some form of a rehab sanctuary...most of those places will radio collar the animals before they are released back to the wild. But thats just my guess.
